I'm pretty free about friending, and I love meeting new people, especially those with common interests, so if you want to add me, just drop a comment so we can get to know each other, yeah? :D Cool. Or if we know each other from elsewhere already, that's also cool!

Managed not to be spoiled for the score, just finished watching the game.

I had so many heart attacks, jesus christ, my pulse is still racing. Oh my god, what a furious, fast-paced battle that was. Some points:

1.     I fucking love you, Geno. First goal to tie up, slapshot tipped by Hornqvist for the lead, that motherfucking dive on the backcheck to knock the puck off Hamon’s stick as he was gearing up to shoot, oh my god I rewound and watched that like 5 times and made dolphin noises. Such a sexy beast tonight. (Also the 2nd intermission interview with Potash, rushing and stumbling over his clearly memorized non-responsive comments to the first question lol, then talking about having lots of energy and power to make those plays after sitting on the bench through 6 minutes of PK, then brushing Potash off in Russian, LMFAO G ILU SFM.)

2.     I fucking love you, Hornqvist. Oh my god. That man is like a Gears of War Energizer Bunny. He keeps going and going and going and he’ll park on top of the net and give you nightmares. 12 shots, so fucking happy he got payoff with that empty netter.

3.     I fucking love you, Flower. You looked so good, so many moments when my heart was in my throat but you stood firm and said not today you fucking fuckfaces.

4.     500th career assist for Sid!! I fucking love you, Sid.

5.     I fucking love you, Suttsy. He kept catching my eye on every PK, tracking the puck in front so well and making these nifty moves to get the clear.

6.     I fucking love you, Pens’ PK in general??? Wow what a change from the first three games, they mixed that up pretty well. Different personnel and different strategies, stepped up enormously.

7.     I appreciate the way the team is sticking up for each other. When Sid was jawing at Halak after the second period ended and then Hamonic shoved him, and then Tanger immediately swung in and gave Hamonic a shove back, and then Downie beelined onto the ice to scream at Hamonic and point a finger in classic “Watch Your Back, Buddy” fashion. He is really living up to his words in the offseason about protecting our star players. (Of course, that and playing his hard and physical style have netted him his share of penalties as well; I guess we’ll see if they can keep that balanced so it doesn’t become a detriment.)

(#whew what an intense game #it wasn't pretty #definitely a rollercoaster to watch #but damn that win was sweet)

NHL 14

cammeh: (GO PENS GO)
So I may or may not have bought NHL 14 earlier today.

…I suck so bad, lmao.

I mean, I was expecting that, my gaming tastes run more toward RPGs and FPS — I haven’t played a sports video game since Virtua Tennis on our family Dreamcast in middle school. I don’t know how any of the modes or trading or strategizing in this works yet, there are way too many leagues and players and endless stats and all these combinations of buttons to memorize to pull off moves and everything on the ice moves so goddamn fast.

I almost flung the game away in overwhelmed panic, but then I said to myself sternly, “No. No, Cam. You can do this. You’re going to do this — and you’re going to win the Penguins the Stanley Cup.” So I buckled down grimly and just plowed through the tutorials a few times and jumped straight into a game and—it’s so much fun??

I mean, obviously I still suck so bad, I’ve played for less than an hour, but despite my wild passing, panicked wheeling in circles in the offensive zone, button-smashing to spam shots at the net, and inept, self-destructive flailing on defense (thank you for carrying me, 1st-star-of-the-game Tanger, god bless u_u) I still managed to lead the Pens to victory over the Islanders 7-1!!!!

WHEEEEEE. Ahahaha, small steps. 8D

(#scoring with Sid and G and Kuni was so joyous and Flower was such a monster in net #but then I also scored with Nealer and Juice and was briefly melancholy #because that will never happen again irl #sighhhh #also it's weird because the rosters are all from after the 2012-2013 season #so there were a bunch of guys on the team I didn't even know #oh well I love them anyway #Duper was missing initially and I was horrified #and then I found him in free agency and signed him immediately #fuck yeah for no salary cap #also I saw that T Segs was still on the Bruins #this won't do #I'll have to update the rosters post-haste)
cammeh: (GO PENS GO)
Okay. So it still hurts, but if I’m not going to curl up in a ball and ignore hockey entirely until next season (I seriously debated it) then I need to figure out who of the remaining teams I’m rooting for.

Pulling for Montreal in the East, obviously. GO HABS.

In the West… I like the Blackhawks and I’m happy that they moved on to the next round, but I don’t think my Pens-loving heart could handle them winning back to back Cups right now, not to mention winning three out of the last five years. Sigh.

So in the West it comes down to the Ducks or the Kings, which makes more sense for me anyway since I live about 20 minutes from both of them. I’ve been trying to cultivate some kind of home-team attachment/pride anyway, but I’ve been stymied by…y’know…having no real preference between the two teams, which are on opposite sides of a fierce rivalry. >_> Guess it’s time to go look up primers or something.

(#what always sucks me into getting invested in a team is getting to know their likeable players #who's more likeable - Ducks or Kings??? #who has better behind the scenes videos so I can really fall in love with them?? #damn it #I don't really want to do this #I'm still grieving #but I've got to cope somehow)
cammeh: (GO PENS GO)

I’m both too keyed up and too exhausted to bang out the full eloquent write-up that I really want to in order to imprint it indelibly on my memory forever and ever and ever, so I’m just gonna go with barfing words all over this post in whatever giddy, jumbled manner they so please.

My brother got me tickets to this game for my birthday because I have NOT been able to shut up about the Pens since I got hooked, and he is officially my favorite ever. (Okay so he already was.) It was my first hockey game since I saw the Ice Dogs in elementary school, and definitely my first since becoming an actual fan. Just to put my total lack of experience and giddy excitement into context.

So on the one hand, as a new fan, every hard loss feels like the end of the world, especially with the bizarre ups and downs of the few months I’ve been watching. I’ve never been invested in a team sport before, and wow, it’s kind of devastating.

On the other hand, I think of all the games and all the years the Pens have played, since long before I knew a single player’s name, and I have to laugh at myself because man - I ain’t seen
nothing yet. There’ve been worse roller-coasters than this one, and there’ll be plenty more in the future, I’m sure.

It’s hockey. It’s the nature of the game. As I hear so many people keep saying, it’s more exciting because anyone can win.

Yeah, it’d be great for the Pens to find more consistency and not keep putting us through the emotional wringer. It’d be great for Sid not to have a -5 stain on his record, it’d be great to keep a lead more than once in a while, it’d be really great if all our injured players could just miraculously be cleared.

But you know what? Nothing I feel as a spectator could ever compare to what those guys on the ice are going through, and they’re the ones I love and support and always will. They’re in it to win it, and I’m behind them all the way.

(#showers let me experience emotional catharsis apparently #I felt like such total shit #and now I just want to charge into their locker room shouting and waving flags #YOU CAN DO IT BOYS #YOU GOT THE SHIT KICKED OUTTA YA AND IT SUCKED #SO PICK YOURSELVES UP OFF YOUR ASSES #MOVE FORWARD #AND GET SHIT DONE #still love ya)
cammeh: (Default)

Ugh. I really enjoyed Uncharted 1 and 2, but I don't know how 3 got such universal critical acclaim, because, aside from the wonderful flashback at the beginning, I've been having to stop every hour or so whenever the urge to throw the game out the window gets too strong.

Just saw Gravity in IMAX.

Stumbled out of the theater on legs as wobbly as a newborn colt, physically and emotionally compromised. Had to order pizza afterward, dropped the menu on the floor when I was at the counter because I was groping about blindly, unfocused and uncoordinated. Teared up intermittently while waiting for our pizza and on the way home.

Still gasping a little. Think I need to have a bit of a lie-down.

ALKJSKLDJFKSDF!!!! /rolling over and dying from pure undiluted a w e s o m e. I need to go see it again, possibly two or three times, I need to go buy the prequel comic ASAP so I can spend more time with the characters and world-building, I need to put down-payments on whatever sequels and other comics are going to come out in the future. I was so worried about my expectations being let down, but NOPE. HAHAHA. Brilliance. Smashy, gorgeous, epic action-adventure brilliance.

For people trashing on the dialogue: It wasn’t as snappy or profound as some other movies, no, but it actually didn’t bother me, and I can be really picky about bad writing? Not naming any names (coughManofSteelcough), but the dialogue in one or two of the other blockbusters so far this summer had me pretty much clawing my face off with sheer awful, but I didn’t cringe even once for any of Pacific Rim’s dialogue. Or even roll my eyes, actually. I don’t really know what people are complaining about, even if it was for the most part fairly simple, I felt like the dialogue was all pretty fitting and flowed well and the deliveries sold it.

For people trashing the plot as unoriginal and/or dumb: ????? Bzuh??? No, I seriously don’t get this. If you went into Pacific Rim expecting Biblical allegories like Neon Genesis Evangelion or trippy social/political commentary like Pan’s Labyrinth, then I don’t know what to tell you, but the plot was not dumb. Nor unoriginal. This is a sci-fi action-adventure romp with humor and heart and heartache and BIG SMASHY BATTLES, and it’s GREAT. It’s a successful homage to and fusion of the giant robot and giant monster movie genres, so yes, you get some commonalities with older films (giant robots fight giant monsters. if this surprises or disappoints you as unoriginal, wtf are you seeing this movie for, seriously??) but the plot itself and the twists and turns it took were original concepts and quite refreshing. And the execution was WONDERFUL.

OMG the direction and art and concept design were gorgeous. OMG the fight choreography was epic. OMG the score and the pacing had me on the edge of my seat, breath caught and muscles tense. OMG the casting was so fantastically diverse and the focus so appropriately international when facing  WORLD-ENDING threat. OMG Mako was a such a badass and she and Raleigh had such great chemistry. OMG I really loved ALL of the characters?? There was absolutely nobody I disliked?? I was cheering for EVERYONE?? And the relationships! I wasn’t expecting to like the character relationships that much, omg I need more of Mako and the Marshal’s backstory, omg I want more of Raleigh’s backstory, omg I want more backstory for ALL OF THE YAEGER PILOTS AND THIS ENTIRE WORLD, omg I want the continuing adventures of Mako and Raleigh because they are FUCKING ADORABLE?!

WHEEEEEEEEE oh god this was so much fun. Y'know? It was really, really FUN.

Or - Regarding Whitewashing Khan

…Yeah, no, I thought I could just write this and then delete it to blow off steam, but I’ve got to get it off my chest before I explode.

I mentioned briefly in one of my previous Tumblr posts that I wasn’t into insulting Benedict Cumberbatch, because I’m not. I don’t have anything against the guy himself or the performance he gave in Star Trek. I liked it, for what it was! He’s a great actor and he did a great job with the role that was written for him, and really, it’s the creators’ fault. They should’ve just let him be John Harrison, Khan’s lieutenant or something, that would’ve been fine! It might even have been, shall we say, epic~!

But I am still fucking pissed off that they chose him for the role of Khan in the first place. And I’ve just been seething more and more every time I dare to look up how people online are reacting, because it’s bullshit.

Hahaha, it shouldn’t matter that they whitewashed Khan because if it’s okay to switch white to POC, it should be equally fine to switch POC to white? In other words, “I want to stick my head in the sand and create a false equivalency in order to ignore that things are absolutely not equal for whites versus minorities in any aspect of our society”, which really super includes media representation, where it is still, still, in 2013, a remarkable, exciting thing for POC when we actually see strong, complex, non-stereotyped, non-sidekick representations of ourselves on screen? Where the interesting stories of real-life POC are all too frequently appropriated and re-cast with white people in Hollywood? (21, anyone? Or Extraordinary Measures, where Harrison Ford was cast in a movie based on the real-life Dr. Yuan-Tsong Chen, thereby continuing the mythology that only white people make important discoveries, contribute to society, or have epic adventures?)

In a time when tons of modern films and series are adapting things from time periods that were even more racist and unequal and overwhelmingly white, balancing things to better reflect our diverse modern society is taking things from a wildly skewed starting point and making things more equal and realistic, while doing the reverse in order to steal one of the vanishingly-rare POC characters that is powerful, unique, respected and admired even by his enemies, and culturally recognized—not to mention who was created as a pointed statement in the midst of the struggles of the Civil Rights era—and turning him white is really damaging and regressive.

(It’s the same with women, BY THE WAY. Changing original series Battlestar Galactica Starbuck into Kara Thrace was an epic, progressive move, and only made sense because there were hardly any freaking women in the original series anyway and keeping that the same in this day and age would’ve been sexist as all hell. Adapting Star Wars and changing the iconic Leia Organa into Luke’s twin brother Larry, on the other hand, would be REALLY SHITTY, because again, hardly any women in the original, so you would hardly want to make it worse in the modern adaptation, right? COMMON SENSE, NO? It is THE SAME FOR POC ROLES, ALKJSKLDFDS.)

But “Hey,” I have heard countless people on the internet say, “This shouldn’t be an issue because directors shouldn’t have to cast inferior actors just to be “PC”! JJ was only casting the most talented person for the part!” …Oh! Okay! In other words, “Any brown actor would have been less talented and inferior for this brown role!” (◡‿◡✿) Because Benedict Cumberbatch is just that amazing. (◕‿◕✿) There is literally no one on this planet, the majority of which is non-white, who could match BC’s intensity and BC’s deep baritone and BC’s soulful eyes of indeterminate color. Right. (ʘ‿ʘ✿) They just had to cast the white dude, artistic integrity demanded it. (ʘ‿ʘ)ノ✿

Who was that dickbag a while back saying that Cumberbatch’s talent is so transcendent that nobody should have an issue even if he were cast to play Martin Luther King, Jr.??

White people already have 99% of sci-fi and every other genre, GTFO with this “erasing one of the few POC characters we DO have is no~ big~ deal~, anyone who thinks otherwise is just overreacting and being irrational and should just shut up, I don’t have the life experience and/or education to understand why this isn’t okay but I’m going to open my mouth like I know everything there is to know about racial tensions and inequality and systematic oppression and declare that I~ know~ better~ than everyone~ who’s~ upset~”

Maybe I’m just overly invested because the year that Khan Noonien Singh was created is the same year it would’ve become not illegal for my parents to get married.

Or because I’ve had strangers double-take at me like I’m a talking monkey when I open my mouth and highly educated broadcast-standard English comes out instead of whatever they were clearly expecting. (As biracial Filipina/White, I am constantly mistaken for Latina, and hoo boy is there ever not-so-veiled prejudice against them Mexicans.)

Or maybe I’m overly invested because I had to sit up in urgent, thrilled excitement just a few months ago when I started watching Terra Nova for the first time and I realized that the protagonist family was OMFG interracial omg the kids remind me of my brother and myself omg this is amazing I have never seen this before omg yay??!  8D 8D 8D Because it is still that rare

Or maybe I’m not overly-anything, and people who don’t know what they’re talking about should try to see things from a different perspective for once.

I've been watching the anime [K] Project as it comes out, along with following the prequel manga and all of the other accessories, and I'm so delighted with everything about it right now I can't even. I watched the subs of episode 11 at work during lunch, which was a terrible idea because then I kept having random little spasms of glee for the rest of the day, which was hell on productivity! LOL.

SPOILERS, and wow this got long )

I was going to talk about the new K: Memory of Red chapter as well (SO FANTASTIC, TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO BE A K FAN), but holy crap this thing is already way too long.

cammeh: (Clint || starting to root for this guy)
I'm tentatively supposed to go see Captain America with friends on the 25th or 26th or something.

I don't know if I can wait that long. 8|a I might just sneak in and see it on opening day by myself like a loser, and then see it again later, because even if it's not super-special-awesome-amazing I doubt I wouldn't like it enough to hang out with friends and catch a second go. And I would get to bask in Steve Rogers being Steve Rogers all over my screen just a few days earlier. :D

Also, Chris Evans being Steve Rogers. I didn't really know anything about Chris Evans until he was cast as Steve except that he was also Johnny Storm, and wtf kind of sloppy internal continuity was that? 8| But then I started reading interviews about his initial reluctance and multiple-times-refusal of the role and the anxiety and sensitivity and really just his down-to-earth personality, and the more I did the more I liked him, and the more I felt that he was the right kind of person to play the part.
I've been avoiding spoilers and clips, but I did see the trailer, and seeing him in action--peeking over the shield making 0_o eyes at Peggy Carter after she shot at him, all the other soldiers diving away from the grenade and Steve, of course, of course, being the one to fling himself on top of it--only reinforced that feeling.
PLEASE TO BE BEING A GREAT STEVE ROGERS, CHRIS EVANS. ;A; Please to be being a great movie, Captain America. ...Or at least a good superhero movie. :|a
...Also, please to continue being the cutest star-struck fanboy over RDJ, Chris Evans. It is THE most adorable thing.

“He’s so great. I can’t say enough about him, I really can’t. I didn’t know what to expect going in to work with him. He’s so talented and he’s got so much charisma and persona. I can honestly say, of all the movie stars I’ve worked with, he’s the one that when he comes on set, you really feel like, ‘Man — this guy’s a movie star!’ You just feel it. When he comes in a room he just owns the oxygen.”

“I had to do a scene with him the other day where I was just nervous, it was just me and him, and I was just terrified. It’s Robert Downey Jr.! And he’s just, you know, every little take he gives you a fist bump, a little thumbs up, and it just changes your whole day. It probably means nothing in his mind but I go back to my trailer, like, giddy. He really is something else.”
--Chris Evans on Robert Downey, Jr. (Avengers)

/dead of cute

I can’t wait to see how this translates on screen. I think it’s potentially a really interesting change to the dynamic from the comics, that Steve is so much younger than Tony in the movies. From their personalities—Steve being such a down-to-earth working class boy and Tony being so high-profile and literally brilliant and an uber-charismatic celebrity and very aware of it—I wouldn’t be surprised if Steve was dazzled by Tony, while being irritated with him at the same time for being high-maintenance and also an arrogant dick. XD
In another news, I finally powered through the five-hour 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice last night (conked out at around 4 AM, WORTH IT), and then I woke up in the morning and there was a 27,000 word Charles/Erik P&P AU on my flist. :D :D :D Three cheers for Serendipity~!
cammeh: (Charles || what we most want to be we ar)
So. My obsession with X-Men: First Class is reaching critical levels. I thought that the giddy infatuation would fade after a week or so (as so often happens for me with shiny new (sort of) fandoms), but it's been two weeks now and it's only getting worse. D:

I honestly expected next to nothing from this movie. While I liked X1 and X2 a lot, I was never in love with them, and Last Stand and Wolverine were just—I don't even want to remember them, okay, and then the trailers and clips for First Class were horrendous, and out of everyone in the X-franchise I've never even been all that interested in Professor X and Magneto. So I basically just saw this because I randomly had time to kill and I was already by the movie theater.

SO MUCH RAMBLING. The movie and Charles and Erik and some stuff about RP. ) getting all of these awesome Marvel reserves right after I left? I will just have to stalk, orz.) Dear_mun is one thing, and I kind of really wish there was some kind of Marvel or general comics dressing room to play around in casually, or even bouncing off someone in a musebox would be pretty cool. Sixwordstories pretty much sucks.

….This~ entry~ is~ too~ long~~~ This is why I update so rarely, I always ramble for hours. 8|a And I have like five other things I wanted to ramble about, like the new Young Justice episode, and the DCU reboot, and Zoro and Reepicheep and dropping from Luceti, and my ridiculous crush on James McAvoy (WHYYY IS HE SO CHARMING, his features shouldn't even go together particularly well in theory, but then he walks around all smiling and saying words and breathing air and I am like hnnnnng and then go watch three of his movies in 24 hours), and etc. etc. etc.

...S-some other time for all that, I guess. orz
